The Virgin Islands were named by Christopher Columbus in 1493
after the legend of Saint Ursula and the 11,000 virgins.
Columbus named them Santa Úrsula y las Once Mil Vírgenes (Saint Ursula and her 11,000 Virgins),
which later got shortened to the Virgin Islands.
